utterance-id1 hi hi i'm katie focusing from cornel b. clinton's that area [noise] come through from learning or dress berkeley scripted like two people <unk> george carlin [noise] and that's why we're doing a short episode produce [noise] beginning of the year we had <unk> if she's getting things or rain williams outta town but i wanted to through this one now you [noise] uh those have you been calling us for beginning probably remember episode thirteen about uh profanity taboo words insults um that was our first <unk> really long mondo episode i think it was over uh an hour and a half and william actually asked me to cut cut it down in time 'cause he was concerned about it being too long [noise] of course we letterhead episodes that were over two hours but yeah that was that was uh his uh thinking at at the time and i sort of agreed to uh to it so this is really the only episode that got really significant content but some of that stuff was really good ah discussion material so i saved all the bits that i ah cut out so basically what follows here is going to be essentially ah an extra long sort of out take real from uh the episode thirteen that's before we started doing that takes even and you know it's it's more than just a random random rambling <unk> there's there's some very good discussion in there about um about dialects and uh a little bit a little bit of socio linguistics talking then just uh uh a little bit uh bianca being bianca and uh so uh for those of you miss her on the show and so uh i will say that this is a little distracted i listen to it i don't think there are any swear words and mess but anyway without any further a jew here is the episode itself ah bonus material from episodes thirteen doors enjoy [laughter] [laughter] right were mixing and matching intelligence <unk> perceived cultural <unk> who are not living here [noise] and and it shows up again all all over the world so she's got a good a good rich con culture you can you know use those um at the basis for the sort of stuff as well um i mean the language we're going to be talking about later today invented by mark rosenfeld or he's really good about this about the sort of cultural borrowing and either cultural borrowing or using saying we're not like those dirty neighbors to the south so using those is as insults and so forth and like <unk> like um what else um region um kind of like the house on the coast so it kind of like [noise] yeah <unk> and like their phonology it well [noise] it's <unk> kind of like expanded show issue i <unk> i [noise] see i'm thinking now i had possibility yeah has it has dialects of less perceived it also has a particular hound distinction that can't be per now [noise] by creatures that like a serious so you could say they could put on the alien voice [noise] maybe i hope [laughter] sure sure [laughter] i mean i only invent languages for myself so i don't have any of these [laughter] any of these things would never occurred to me to do [noise] um yeah i mean like you get a <unk> not really hurting any county kind of complicated 'cause like <unk> like <unk> they cannot the children that are <unk> and make their land thanks [laughter] that's kinda off to like come out in [noise] and it's kind of <unk> right to like um east i guess [noise] and you know because they end up being kind of wander through my alley <unk> that guy like <unk> like when you're off on the outskirts <unk> that's a hike yeah fifty five [noise] <unk> [noise] see the thing is i can see that going both ways because i know well i know that chinese will go both ways and mandarin so there's a <unk> there's this distinction between um oh veal or cricket is and record what cricket is that is lack in <unk> dialects all over but it's mainly associated with um southern china and taiwan and one yeah yeah and that's huge thing and some contacts [noise] has a negative marking like uh like if you're in the north <unk> an outsider or something that view negatively but it also has been at least sort of in the nineties are so used positively because a lot of taiwanese pop singer were very popular ha so [noise] and then eventually the chinese government decided to uh make it illegal for you to affect ah taiwan accent on on tv [laughter] <unk> that's that's derrick okay [laughter] i don't know anything <unk> [noise] i don't they put that one on the news uh but anyway we're actually over an hour already very very quick story i when i was starting to pick chinese i went on to the parakeet which is our uh at at w. you we have the you know like uh uh many monorail with on demand cars but anyway uh transport system [noise] this i hear what sounds like a tonal language behind me and it sounds like it has more tone and mandarin so i'm thinking maybe cantonese how i look back it's a black guy i'm like oh he's speaking some <unk> language [noise] he's power walking on the huh how's though or not <unk> or <unk> or it's not just a ban two languages there's lots of time languages i had read yeah lesley bunch of people like command and they had that and i think i know they <unk> total language [laughter] stand [noise] <unk> now like i i never i never actually ask this guy <unk> unfortunately but uh anyway <unk> and uh i've never looked at the <unk> okay are you kidding wow look at it [laughter] languages long before that existed so it's not like you have to you but he i never like came <unk> i was like oh i don't know it <unk> [noise] that was that was one of the first things i i came up on when i was starting inventing languages <unk> but <unk> <unk> no i did not i started in high school yes that that is one thing but i heard the stupidest [noise] um there was a man's episode where they had someone who's i don't know some traditional religious society they didn't really <unk> that uses used style but she was using the the entire time and or i don't i i i'm sure there were people who were who did that [laughter] that way at that particular period in history but like the quakers [noise] i'm i'm she may have been a quaker but she's [noise] i don't know she was very religious like about that all that you could really tell yeah [noise] people always misuse it was for him and i just checked no the imperative in middle english is just singular imperative is just the <unk> oh and the plural ends and th <unk> would be oh heather yeah just <unk> or come in there if you were speaking several people how <unk> <unk> <unk> <unk> <unk> <unk> if you were speaking to several people okay or at least charter mixes distinction i don't know if it was still shooting king james but any <unk> oh yeah [noise] but no it <unk> <unk> do this all the time right they read a little choicer and suddenly they're trying to or shakespeare and they're trying to speak this way and they know <unk> different things [noise] yeah [noise] so [laughter] that's not really <unk> [laughter] i <unk> i can't i can't [noise] i heard uh the the the worst that i've seen is a friend of mine using them but adding the ending to <unk> that had a help her but i've heard that had an auxiliary at that [laughter] like you know [laughter] it goes on the <unk> it goes on it it had non not have do it or whatever right probably oh [laughter] oh dear [laughter] complaining about bad <unk> [laughter] i think we're done yeah part of our cats may be cut out in that time i think that in fact that half an hour [noise] all right thank you for listening and uh hopefully next time we'll have a a mother um proper episode now but uh i i really hope that and uh [noise] this is [noise] me signing off ah remember on language email dot com [noise] all that stuff and i'd be calm i think you were listening to con language you could find our our cards it's your nose at <unk> dot com you can send questions comments poor topic or featured language suggestions [noise] to <unk> to submit upon langhorn that line greedy for the top of the show see or contribute paid for detail [noise] <unk> provided by the language creation society and our team music is by no divide [noise]
