utterance-id1 [noise] [noise] well don't coupon language i guess by constructed languages people <unk> uh today is going to be a short episode just to me uh we are going to return was pull episodes in february uh as long as everything works out i think it will so today uh this is the first episode of the new year and i am uh this is my second time attempting to record this uh hopefully i won't have any more argue issues uh but uh i wanted to uh do this episode as sort of looking back at uh the what happened last month uh <unk> so if you don't know uh a bunch of congress has started this event during december where they create one word in there <unk> every day and it it [noise] [noise] your kid's shirt between several <unk> that uh a lot of people just that you do just one <unk> during for this and uh you are highly encourage to post your daily words uh publicly on on the internet in some for either in a block post or put it on <unk> or something like that so i wanted to uh i participated a little bit but uh the end of december got crazy for me so i started it and then i kind of uh <unk> uh a little bit [noise] [noise] ah too busy for it and then kind of uh gave it up i'll make it one of my resolution to this year to ah try to stick it all the way through september but i did want to highlight some words that other people create it and uh i got all of these trump <unk> uh if you follow the uh <unk> how you may have seen at least uh um <unk> when i was checking that i <unk> a lot of uh like simple words that i found uh interesting so i'm going to go through a bunch of those um uh and uh i will um highlight different words but i went through your most all of these words or things that i think are interesting for some semantic region <unk> either <unk> or um an interesting uh extension of meaning or something like that so let's get started with it the first one you know no no uh worries about conflict of interests here just my cohost ah william is the first happens to be the first one on my list uh he had hot and i believe this is in uh new heinlein all that and uh yeah heart the base meaning is see or look at but it also means right so it doesn't give any sort of explanation but he has example on his <unk> but i thought it's it was an interesting sort of expansion of me i'm not sure he got that from his research things or if he came up with that uh william no ah is behind the <unk> looks up when he he he's he's been doing a lot of reading about common correspondence see between uh meaning of words and such so the next one that will talk about uh came from uh someone he goes buy houses very in on <unk> and i will linked to all of the uh all of these either blockbuster <unk> in the show notes so that people uh follow along it was i believe would be <unk> and it means telescopes which okay er word for telescope i'm not gonna that's not be the interesting thing but the interesting thing was that she had it i know here he says but more modern ones are called like kobe so and that's a borrowing from english so that was something i think you're taught about and i think that's an interesting thing ah whenever you're making words and even for like summer or even if you're just trying to do things you know one day at a time it's an interesting thing too i think it's a good thing to do when you're making words free language too um always be thinking about sending him and related words and other other things that have similar [noise] so so the idea that you know he has this uh <unk> maybe frog for older telescope like um i don't know like ah a telescope from <unk> time or maybe even a little later but like something that's twenty or twenty first century you call it <unk> that's that seems like a realistic sort of division sometimes uh you get that kind of thing uh going on in their languages so uh i went to uh so the next one and now they're they're oil i don't know how to pronounce his uh toward her name uh but uh this guy korea they were uh <unk> meaning a danger of flake the the interesting thing was is that it's a singular motive derivation of sandra so i really like when people do these sort of grammatical derivation for things that you know you know doing doing these sort of a radical changes and there's another example but i'll i'll get you later and uh uh i could see ah i don't know i would like to know you know what where else does the <unk> <unk> oh does it uh also come up or ah when the strand of hair or a drop of water things like that that would be an interesting thing so 'cause it looks like he's sort of drawing you know a single unit out of a mass now so it would be interesting if you eat that ah how well since uh since the hat is a derivation with a name i assume that it you know more general than just the one the um next one and for some reason when i was going through these i ended up picking up a lot of them that people do it on the third day i don't know maybe that's just one that i we treated a lot or or what but i tried to get some some for later but i says and i'm going to butcher this horribly it's ah <unk> the feeling of dread between knowing you messed up in the anger up from the one you <unk> uh looking at this now i'm like i'm thinking i'm not exactly sure what the meaning is i'm i'm assuming that it's the point where you know your messed up but the person who would be affected by it doesn't know yet is what i'm thinking that's an interesting very short of specific meaning that you know it's interesting to have words like that i wouldn't <unk> when you're making words i would say don't make all words like this because with these like super super awesome interesting specific meaning for stealing or something like that but now and again they're very uh sort of cool to ah see things like that uh this is another grammatical thing that i thought was actually really interesting so um ah yeah stressor um i'm not even sure if i went to try to pronounce it but ah ah they'll all linked to the sweet he's has uh oh now i got a uh i believe actually and it's a <unk> and it has you know it has punctual meetings and dirt at me so under punctual it means bring fetch deliver <unk> dirty it means collect accumulate supply so i i i i'm guessing this is sort of like you know but punctual is is referring more partial interactive are sort of aspect [noise] uh categories and the the the the meaning changes in this way so you you know bring fetched delivered those are very specific event that you know happening appointed time collect accumulate supply those are her over a period of time so the the dirty <unk> [noise] i really like this i really like when when people use [noise] even when people choose to have words that change and meaning on intellectual morphology and i don't know if it's entirely inflection or their original thing but [noise] uh often often you can sort of uh you know grade the boundary between the two fuzzy the boundary between the two by having a you know very big changes in meaning from more regular derby um intellectual categories um [noise] uh this is one uh from hallmark or how much it's in his his language is jovan and the word is <unk> uh pretzel <unk> i just thought that was that was that was an interesting visual thing to ah to think about if you don't don't understand where the the magic relationship is coming from look at a picture of pretzel and look at a picture of <unk> percent an inside and you get so uh this is uh this next one uh is uh i'm looking to uh uh get paid for this guy uh <unk> and um this was on december or he meant that it was um uh the page actually has three variation that looks like they're tone variations but i'm looking at ah the middle one which looks like it's a uh midtown on the ah on the announcements so maybe so it's ah you being a uh a child who has many skills but know specialization or a child with an uncertain clan affiliation and there's also um references to adults there's a masculine that refers to an adult man there's a jack of all <unk> and then the same thing uh feminine that refers to a woman so um and it's all turned differences but only the child version has the second meaning of the uncertain planning affiliation so i thought that was an interesting thing not only um you know having this interesting um this interesting shifting meaning but also only applying it to one out of a series of i'm assuming this is uh a gender difference in in <unk> now so that's an interesting thing and i think it's interesting because ah i don't know what his reasoning was for putting that second meaning only on the child versions but i could see possibly that a child who has a jack of all trades is not really such a common thing so maybe you know this word logically existed but yes shifted in meaning here we have a another friend of mine um ah ah christo ah <unk> <unk> [noise] um [noise] and i saw this and um [noise] so i saw the <unk> [noise] and it was interesting in itself but then once i clicked through too is ah templar page explaining it it got even more interesting so the word is uh <unk> um [noise] uh yeah <unk> <unk> no <unk> uh i'm not sure if i'm doing <unk> correctly but it says gore warfare crowd click bad hell also as an adjective unhealthy [noise] so that's interesting in itself that there's a metaphor relating war too how true that house they you know [noise] um disease is war war is he's i don't know exactly how how it goes but interesting thing was that he said he already had a word for peace and i'm not sure how his rump position fortunate yeah but um yeah i don't work for peace but also matt good health so when he made the word for war you just sort of weird that you know that can be interesting you know you don't have to make <unk> <unk> that way and they're meaning but i thought when i was reading this post i was thinking you know crystal maybe if you listen to this [noise] maybe you could actually actually ten this 'cause it looks like you have sort of a <unk> <unk> <unk> matter for um uh pieces healthy war is unhealthy or something like that uh maybe could extend it in in different ways maybe make a make a germ [noise] i mean the same thing as an enemy soldiers or something like that to to make it even more sort of uh uh fun met her for going on and finally this was on the thirty first and it was just appropriate to that particular day uh the word is from uh coming from uh andre his <unk> uh seven words and the word is free to make up for him decision to do something and ah so ah <unk> even has like a little an example in the winter post an image and <unk> his example translate says i made resolutions today i hope i won't leave them uh done i just thought it was interesting what it looks like he's doing is something i really encourage is that he wanted to translate the idea of a new year's resolution uh where you know you make uh you you really resolved to do something good and new year's something to improve some part of your life but she didn't want to just <unk> correctly make uh word means resolution use language and just was thinking okay how making a new year's resolution how do the <unk> speakers of my <unk> say that and that's the question i think you should be asking whatever you're doing translation for on language um don't be don't me into trying to translate things work for work what you should we trying to do is um look at the whole sentences or even like whole paragraphs but whole sentences at least and being thinking of [noise] of how well my <unk> people say that because anyone who has done any translation at all or looked at any translation you're all will tell you that with real natural language is going from one language the other you <unk> you can't translate word for word because it will not make sense [noise] it'll be weird so that's what translators do is they go <unk> and they make all kinds of decisions and based on what our caught more common phrases et cetera so i think that's a motive thinking that um kind of language really should do when they're using translation to build their car on line [noise] but that it's easy to ah get out of doing [noise] because <unk> just to make the words meat [noise] ah so [noise] i think uh [noise] that [noise] this is a very interesting [noise] a very good ah [noise] sort of example of something that you should be doing [noise] if you're making [noise] word for it online and doing translation [noise] ah from your native like [noise] so [noise] that was all that i want to do [noise] do today hey um [noise] be looking for another episode [noise] next month [noise] i work for you then [noise] and [noise] <unk> [noise] thank you for listening to <unk> you could find our our cars ensure notes at <unk> dot com you can send quite comments for conflict poor featured language suggestion [noise] to <unk> dot com [noise] to submit a con line or nightline
