utterance-id1 before i get started i wanted to give people a heads up i'm going to be moving or audio files too uh butter audio hosting service this should help ah make the fee more reliable make playback more liable that sort of thing uh but there might be some funniness with the feeds for a little bit that tends to happen whenever i make any kind of changes uh so just the heads up uh if there's any weird things happening with i tuned feed just bear with that if there's any issues that means that you'll have to change this feed you subscribe to our i'll let people know about that okay uh thank you and on the show [noise] both of them to find like or is it hot but mine which is <unk> i'm <unk> [noise] and i'm doing a short today this is a short [noise] that i've been wanting to do while uh discussing something <unk> visiting my boy leaves fame china [noise] but i've messed it up so many times that i've had to write up a script for it so [noise] hopefully this recording will have everything correct [noise] way back in <unk> eight we discussed <unk> and we spend a little time describing how it works and mandarin chinese in short it's fairly complex would distinctions <unk> not only on the paternal line but also in terms of birth order for certain levels [noise] for this pod cats i mentioned that the way that i learned it in classes that mandarin <unk> eight kinship terms translating as english cousin made by combining huh meaning within the paternal line or be all outside the paternal line with one of the four sibling term good see yeah or may meaning older brother younger brother older sister and younger sister respectively this is true at least in more formal context where you might want to make these distinctions but a little experience on the ground show some differences at least four leaves home village lee is from a small village of obesity in whom and province uh their window dressing cousins you don't usually use <unk> or <unk> you just call the by the sibling term so she would usually not addressed someone as time good or you know may just good or may may but when introducing them she might use the more specific terms for clarity in addition to this unlike the english word cousin you can't extend these terms beyond your own generation for example <unk> has a cousin who is her father's sisters son who she would call good or specifically bianca in english lee and her <unk> son would be cousins once removed but in chinese lee calls her yonkers um <unk> which usually means a nephew on the same paternal line her youngest son would call league ooh which would usually be applied to your father's sister but here is being extended to your father's female cousin so essentially ah they're taking the distinction of what generation you're from as being important even for people who are in your extended family the most interesting to come from the experience though is that in the least home village people actually keep track of the generation it seems like throughout the village even um among people who i'm not sure are related i was taken aback when one of leaves families neighbors who is much older than us and isn't obviously related to family told me that she would call me <unk> which means the husband have ones who ah so essentially she was calling me her uncle i don't know where there's a there's a way to trace the whole village to one ancestor or maybe it comes historically from some point in the past when some unrelated individuals' were calling each other brothers and sisters but i think it's an interesting example of how language and society can interact in a small close knit community i don't know how far this generation tracking will survive into the future as leaves villages being demolished soon leases most of the village will be moved to the same development but it is a more urban setting they're moving too but i thought it would be an interesting inspiration for con language and con worlders who wanna make smaller village communities and think about how things might turn out in these little corners of world so i've just wanted to share those observations with you guys uh [noise] these are just my casual observations to take that for when it's not [noise] i'm not doing [noise] ah really rigorous <unk> here but [noise] i thought i would share that with you guys [noise] the little observation that might be <unk> [noise] so [noise] with all that said i'm going to say i've become [noise] thank you for listening coupons [noise] you can find our our <unk> online or even dot com [noise] support us on patriotic patriotic dot com slash timeline or [noise] you can also find a spot faced both <unk> both us also are gone by hearing [noise] and if you would like to hear your online featured on the top of the show you could look at our tribute pages has the instructions or what you translate how to send [noise] on liners <unk> spaces provided tied to language <unk> society and our music kissed by no device [noise] [noise]
